Dodge Ram vs. Chevrolet Silverado vs. Ford Super Duty
2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT
The Dodge Ram 3500 SLT is a truck. It has towing and hauling capacity and keeps up with its Ford and Chevrolet counterparts.
2007 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 LT
Comparatively the Next Generation Silverado is a truck too, with chrome accents and independent front wheel suspension.
The LT package is also comparative to the Ford XLT and Dodge SLT.
How do you choose between trucks that seem so similar?
When choosing a heavy duty truck there are three completely separate options available.
- 2008 Ford F350 Super Duty XLT @ $41,899
- 2007 Next Generation Silverado 3500 LT @$45,370
- 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT @ $44,205
All three trucks are similar in gas engine size, price, seating, towing and hauling capacity. You'll need to ask yourself what you will be using the truck for and who will be using it with you, and how good you want your Ford truck to look! Of course, consider which options you would love to pay for!
For comparing diesel and gas engines see our previous article here.
Which truck is better for your lifestyle and needs?
It is the small things that come standard on your truck that you will appreciate later. The items that you would never know you needed until you went to use it, such as a glove compartment light in the Ram and F350, or driver and passenger lumbar support, standard on the new Super Duty and essential for those long drives with the 5th Wheel.
What kind of passengers will you have with you?
The rear space in all three trucks is comparable in volume (for instance 1,600 Litres). Liquid volume does not compute to me how much I can fit. We can use some examples, like when I explain the capacity of the Ford Taurus trunk: Four sets of Golf Clubs.
Pictured at left Greg, Jason and Peter. All on our Sales Team, all over 6 feet tall.
So let's try some real life examples for these back seats:
In the Dodge Ram you can fit three grown men in the back seat and they will be comfortable, their size 11 shoes will fit well and they can be over 6 feet tall, their cell phones will be touching and they won't be able to eat lunch while you drive, but if you got the optional DVD entertainment system they could watch a safety video on the way to work.
In the Chevrolet Silverado you can fit two booster seats and one skinny teenager, they will be tight but it's family love right, sorry no optional DVD, but you will have overhead console storage for the kleenex and favorite sing-a-long cd!
The Ford F350 can seat three overfed men and their size 12s with no hip touching, that half a foot in the back makes a big difference, the center seat comes with the three point seatbelt and the low tire pressure warning will keep everyone safer with such a load and give you better gas mileage.
How often do you travel and what do you take with you?
The Ford Super Duty is ready for towing, the hitch receiver comes standard from the factory. The other two do need some accessories before starting your trip but the additional parts should take less than a day to install.
The Ford also comes standard with power door locks and a locking tailgate so that, with the addition of a tonneau cover - covered by the Ford 36 month accessory warranty - you can lock all camping gear, horse tack and tools up when you are away from your truck.
The three trucks, as I said before, are all comparable. Although there are some very strong differences, like included options, rear seating, available accessories and tire sizes.
Very different tire sizes; the Silverado with 16", the Ford with 18" and the Ram in the middle with 17".
Tire size and rating do affect what you can tow and haul so be sure to check those items when replacing tires and rims as it will change the manufacturers recommendations.
If you are traveling distances, the overhead map reading lights will come in handy on the Chevy truck and the Ford, they are also available as an option on the Ram, when reaching for the map the glove box light will also come in handy in the Ram and Ford. The silverado does have a locking glove compartment where you can safely store your insurance papers and band aids.
The illuminated passenger mirror on the Chevrolet and Ram will make sure no matter what time you arrive somewhere, at least one of you will look great! With battery run down protection on the Chevy you can be assured your truck will start no matter what you have accidentally left on, but the F350 has a heavy duty alternator providing longevity and peace of mind in the future, along with being able to power your camper's fridge or air conditioning!
If you are driving the truck to work everyday the speed sensitive volume on the Silverado will be a nice touch, it is available as an option on the Ford Super Duty but not at all on the Ram.
Ford F350 Super Duty Wins!
The three trucks are very similar, price, towing, hauling, seating, and engine size. (For differences on diesel engines vs gas engines see our previous article.)
What it really comes down to is the Ford F350 Super Duty has standard all the items you need to be safe, comfortable and hauling.
From the locking tailgate and hitch receiver to the map reading lights and spacious back seat the new Super Duty in its most basic form is everything you need from a truck.
The Ford Super Duty also has a reputation to uphold, Built Ford Tough.
